What causes luteal phase symptoms
The luteal phase begins after ovulation and ends when the next period starts. The emptied follicle becomes the corpus luteum, which produces progesterone as well as some oestrogen. If pregnancy does not occur, both hormones fall late in the phase and menstruation follows.
Those hormonal shifts interact with multiple systems. Progesterone can raise resting body temperature slightly and may affect sleep, appetite and gastrointestinal function.
